As the Covid-19 crisis creates turmoil and economic stagnation worldwide, Mountain Lion Agriculture Ltd. has again demonstrated its resilience and enjoyed a period of unprecedented growth in the first half of 2020. Despite week-long lockdowns and other challenges to our daily operations, production and sales came in close to target as our team stepped up its efforts and worked closely with our community partners. COVID-19 is causing rice prices to increase in Sierra Leone as imports become more expensive in the wake of global export restrictions and trade disruptions:

Not only has this enhanced our margin and market, it vividly illustrates the importance of local production for food security (one of our core impact). We are proud to continue to prove that doing good is good for business, and that local smallholders if properly supported can lead the way to prosperity and food security in Sierra Leone.

As our market strengthens and our impact case becomes even more profound, Mountain Lion Agriculture is also pleased to announce a new partnership with a leading Dutch organization, Incluvest. This partnership will enable a significant increase in our production capacity while reducing our COGS and environmental footprint through a mill upgrade that will convert our main waste product – rice husks – into an energy source. Stay tuned for updates over the coming months as we chronicle the upgrade!

As imported rice prices continue to increase, consumers are suffering while food insecurity is on the rise in Sierra Leone. We are both thankful and proud to stand with our visionary, courageous partners at MEDA, KIVA, Woord en Daad, Cotton Tree Foundation, Horsch Foundation and Incluvest to enhance food security during this current crisis. Our commitment to Sierra Leone’s vulnerable farmers and consumers is unwavering, and together we will move forward through the crisis towards a better future for all.
