Mountain Lion Agriculture is immensely pleased to have the unexpected honour of being featured as an example of best practices in international development by one of Canada’s top Academics in the field. Professor Adam Sneyd’s new, seminal work “Politics Rules” has been highly regarded and well received internationally. The London School of Economics Book Review reported that, in his new book, ‘Sneyd offers a thought-provoking and engaging guide that would be of great use in the classroom, and would also be highly instructive for specialists and development practitioners, themselves so often caught up in the politics of development without fully acknowledging it.’ (London School of Economics Book Review, June 2019)

In this new and important contribution to Development Studies, Professor Sneyd prominently features Mountain Lion Agriculture as a unique example of success in Sierra Leone:

“Before the (1991-2001) war, Sierra Leone had been a regional rice powerhouse… The Sierra Leonean team recognized that aid was not a sustainable solution when it came to rice. At best, they believed that food aid was entrenching the country’s growing dependence on imports of cheap, dirty, old and broken rice. Local agribusiness entrepreneur Donald O.T. Smart and the other members of the team…ultimately proposed developing a rice-growing and-buying operation as well as constructing a production facility. This venture has produced astounding results. Now an established firm, Mountain Lion Agriculture (2019) explicitly aims to enhance food security through its red rice operations, and as a locally controlled social enterprise has received numerous international awards.” (Politics Rules, pp 39)
